The Reverse is by James Earle Fraser and is a modified version of the American Buffalo coin designed in 1913. The image is of a buffalo (or American bison) standing on a mound, from which the coin gets its nickname.
The Obverse is also a modified version of James Earle Fraser's Indian Head used on nickels which he designed in 1913. The image is a mixture of three chiefs from different tribes who modeled for Fraser.Image credit: United States Mint.
