UK - The Gold BritanniaAlthough the UK already had maybe the most recognisable gold coin in the World with the gold sovereign, back in the 1980's there was a growing trend towards one ounce gold bullion coins. So in 1987 the Royal Mint launched their own 0.9999 1oz bullion gold coin. What better choice of name as Britannia, the female representation of Britain for almost 2000 years.
The 1987 Gold Britannia was designed by Philip Nathan. It's been updated and had different designs in some years, but the reverse image is always that of Britannia. The Obverse has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
