The 1944 Threepence - George VIThe 12-sided (dodecagonal) 'thruppenny bit' of 1944 was actually minted by an auxiliary mint at Pinewood Studios in London, as the Royal Mint decided to move some facilities out of London for fear of bombing during the War.
The 1944 threepence was made from Nickel-Brass and weighed 6.8g (about 5 times heavier than the silver threepence). At first the 12-sided coin was unpopular but that changed when it provided an easy way to identify the coin in the blackouts of WWII. SCBC: 4112.
The Reverse was designed by Francis Madge Kitchener who choose the thrift plant motif to reflect the thrift required during the war years.
The edge is plain.
