The 2017 Gold Sovereign Proof2017 was a special year for the gold sovereign: it was the 200th anniversary of the modern sovereign. To commemorate this the Royal Mint reproduced the original reverse image that was seen on the 1817 gold sovereign. SCBC: SC11.
There is also a 2017 Piedfort Gold Sovereign.
Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on the reverse of the coin but, as in the original 1817 sovereign, the image is enclosed in a garter. The legend is the motto of the Order of the Garter: HONI SOIT QUI MAY Y PENSE (Shame on him who thinks this evil).
The edge is milled.
