The 2001 Gold Proof SovereignBendetto Pistrucci’s portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on the reverse of the coin.
Queen Elizabeth II’s fourth portrait is on the obverse, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The 2001 gold proof sovereign was orignally housed in a Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsule, presented in its Royal Mint velvet case with outer black card box, accompanied with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.
12,500 individually boxed proof sovereigns were authorised by the Royal Mint in 2001 although only 10,806 were actually released.
The coin was also released attached to a stamp cover.
The stamp cover is generally less popular than the boxed version.
