The 1983 Gold Sovereign Proof - Elizabeth IIOnly proof sovereigns were issued in 1983 - the year that saw the end of the one pound note in favour of the one pound coin.
Benedetto Pistrucci's famous portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on the reverse of the 1983 Gold Proof Sovereign.
Queen Elizabeth II's second portrait can be seen on the obverse, designed by Arnold Machin. SCBC: SC1.
The sovereign is made of solid 22 carat gold (Gold Fineness of 0.916), and weighs 7.98 grams. It has a diameter of 22.05mm.
