1959 Gold Sovereign

The 1959 Gold Sovereign - Elizabeth II

The 1959 Gold Sovereign was the last issue until 1962.

The 1959 sovereign depicts Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George slaying the dragon on the reverse of the coin.

Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait can be seen on the obverse of the coin, designed by Mary Gillick.

Only 1,358,228 sovereigns were struck in 1959 as Britain and America battled to fix the price at $35/oz.

A rare number of Proof sovereigns were also released.
