The 1957 Gold SovereignThe 1957 Gold Sovereign was the first Elizabeth II Sovereign made available to collectors. A rare number of Proof sovereigns were also released.
The sovereign shows Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George and the dragon on the reverse of the coin.
Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait is on the obverse of the coin. The design was by Mary Gillick and was used on gold sovereigns up to 1968 (although a new design did not appear until 1974).Image credit: M J Hughes Coins
