The 1879 Gold Sovereign - Melbourne Mint


The 1879 Melbourne Sovereign depicts Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George slaying the dragon can be seen on the reverse of the coin. A small ‘M’ just below the Queen’s portrait indicates the sovereign was produced in Melbourne, Australia.
Queen Victoria’s young head can be seen on the obverse of the coin.

Only 2,740,594 sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne Mint in 1879 (Not including shield back mintage figures).
