Publius Helvius Pertinax (1 August 126 – 28 March 193) succeeded Commodus to become the first emperor during the Year of the Five Emperors. He was Roman emperor for the first three months of 193AD. Pertinax was born as the son of a freed slave, and he died when assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard.
