What happended in 899?
In Roman numerals: DCCCXCIX. After ruling for 28 years, King Alfred the Great dies and is succeeded by his eldest son, Edward the Elder as king of Wessex. There's a few bitter disputes between family members disputing the succession but Edward prevails and rules for around 25 years.
