The 80AD Denarius - Titus / Winged thunderboltSilver Denarius of Emperor Titus Flavius, struck at the Rome Mint in 80AD. Diameter 18mm and weighs 2.55g.
The date is derived by Museums Victoria: "Titus' Tribunician year began on 1 July and he began his eighth Consulship on 1 Jan 80 AD. The production of this coin can therefore be put in the first half of 80 AD (TR P IX with COS VIII)".
The Obverse shows the laureated head of Emperor Titus facing right. Legend "IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M".
The Reverse shows a winged thunderbolt on a draped table. The thunderbolt is a weapon used by Jupiter and is thus one of the emblems of the God Jupiter, the King of Gods. Legend "TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P".Image credit: Museums Victoria
