The 66AD Sestertius - NeroOrichalcum Sestertius minted between 54AD and 68AD at the Lugdunum Mint. Orichalcum is a golden-coloured bronze alloy that was often used in ancient Rome coinage. Diameter 35 mm and weighs about 27.18g.
Museums Victoria (Australia) says "Minted by Lugdunum. Sutherland (RIC p.180) places this issue in his Issue IV from Lugdunum, the mint being marked by the small globe at the point of the neck truncation on the coin's obverse. He associates this issue with Issue V from the Rome mint and suggests the date circa 66 AD."
The Obverse shows the laureate head of Emperor Nero facing left. A small globe at the point of the neck truncation suggests the Lugdunum mint.
The edge is plain.
The Reverse shows Roma seated facing left dividing. In exergue "ROMA". "S C" divided across the coin. SC means senatus consultum, or 'by decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue.Image credit: Museums Victoria
