The 39AD Quadrans - Gaius (Caligula)Bronze Quadrans (a quarter of an As) of Emperor Gaius (better known as Caligula) cast in 39AD at the Rome Mint. The rim legend on the reverse is a continuation of the obverse. The letters RCC at the centre record the remission of a tax (remissa ducentesima) of half a percent on sales. Diameter 17mm and weighs 3.14g.
The Obverse shows the Cap of Liberty surrounded by S C. SC means senatus consultum, or 'by decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue. Legend is "C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG".
The edge is plain.
