21AD-22AD Dupondius – Tiberius

21AD-22AD Dupondius Tiberius Reverse MV

The 21AD-22AD Dupondius - Tiberius

Orichalcum Dupondius of Emperor Tiberius. Orichalcum is a golden-coloured bronze alloy that was often used in ancient Rome coinage. Struck around 21-22AD. Diameter 30mm and weighs 13.27g.

The Obverse shows a diademed (a type of crown) and draped bust. As the word IVSTITIA appears below it is probably the Roman goddess Justitia (Lady Justice, Latin: Iustitia) although many think it is Livia Drusilla, the mother of Tiberius.

The Reverse shows "SC" in the centre with large letters. SC means senatus consultum, or 'by decree of the Senate' so the coin was an official issue. Legend "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVG PM TR POT XXIIII".

The TR POT XXIIII dates the coin. TR POT is Tribunicia Potestate meaning Holder of Tribunitian power. Tiberius had his 24th year of holding this title in 21-22AD.
