The Royal Mint's Iconic Specimens Tales of the Earth collection was launched in December 2023 and the first of the dinosaur-themed series was the most famous of all dinosaurs, the Tyrannosaurus.
Tyrannosaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous period (100.5 million years ago to 66 million years ago) and this ferocious beast weighed in at over 6 tonnes and was more than 12 metres in length. The first fossils of a Tyrannosaurus Rex were found by American fossil hunter Barnum Brown (1873-1963), also known as 'Mr Bones', in Montana, USA in 1902.
The coins are available as 50p (BU, BU Colour, Silver Proof), and also Silver and gold proofs in various weights.
The Reverse shows an image of a Tyrannosaurus with the words "TYRANNOSAURUS" and "CRETACEOUS".
Edge is plain.
