The 2023 Quarter - Bessie ColemanBessie Coleman was first African American and first Native American woman pilot. Born on 26 January 1892 in Atlanta, Texas. She travelled to Paris in 1920 to learn to fly as she was rejected by US flying schools, obtaining a licence on 15 June 1921.
From 1922 she performed in dangerous aviation shows where she was known as Queen Bess or Brave Bessie. Bessie Coleman died, aged only 34, on 30 April 1926 in a plane crash in Jacksonville, Florida, when she was a passenger in a practice flight. She was honoured on a US Postal stamp in 1995.
The Reverse is by Eric David Custer (Sculptor) and Chris Costello (Designer). It is an image of Bessie Coleman in her flying gear with a plane in the sky above. The "6.15.1921" is the date Coleman received her pilot license.
The Obverse is a portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser (1889-1966).
