The 2023 Penny - Definitive Design - Charles IIIThe first King Charles III One Penny definitive design for circulation. Definitives are the standard designs seen on the majority of official circulating currency. Unlike commemoratives (which are usually one-off designs), definitive designs stay the same for years or even decades.
Designed by the Royal Mint, the Reverse of the 2023 1p design shows a hazel dormouse. This is in keeping with the fauna and flora theme chosen for the first set of definitive coins.
The left background design of three interlocking Cs feature on the coins represents the third King Charles, and taking its inspiration from the cypher of Charles II.
The coin is circular with a diameter of 20.32mm and weighs 3.56g. The coin is Copper-Plated Steel.
Edge is plain.
The Obverse shows the portrait of King Charles II by Martin Jennings and features a privy mark of a crown to the right of the neck.Coin shown is a proof one penny from the 2023 base proof set. These coins are available (subject to stock) from the Royal Mint Shop.
