The 2023 JRR Tolkien Gold £2 Proof Gold Proof £2 coin to commemorate JRR Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon and a Fellow of Pembroke College at the University of Oxford, and later the Merton Professor of English Language and Literature and Fellow of Merton College.
Inner: 22 carat yellow gold. Outer: 22 carat red gold.
The coin was issued by the Royal Mint in September 2023, and is available in BU, Silver Proof, Silver Proof Piedfort and Gold Proof.
The Reverse, by David Lawrence, shows JRR Tolkien's monogram. Legend is "1892 JRR TOLKIEN 1973" AND "WRITER POET SCHOLAR".
Edge is inscribed "NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST", a quote from Aragon in Lord of the Rings.
