The 2023 Five Pounds - Mary Seacole - Silver Proof2023 £5 coin celebrating Mary Seacole (1805-1881). Mary was born in Jamaica and ran a boarding house as a 'doctress', caring for sick people of the Crimean War. She was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit (posthumously) in 1990. In 2003 the Every Generation website voted her 'The Greatest Black Briton'.
The coin is released as BU, Silver Proof, Silver Proof Piedfort and Gold Proof. These coins are available (subject to stock) from the Royal Mint Shop.
The Reverse, by Sandra Deiana, shows a portrait of Mary Seacole based an an original photograph, with a the British flag in the background.
The edge of the proof versions carries the inscription "SHE ONE WHO NURSED HER SICK". The BU version has a milled edge.
The Obverse shows a portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. Denomination is 5 Pounds. Legend is "CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS 2023".The Silver Proof has a Limited Edition (LE) of 1,500. Silver Proof Piedfort LE is 750, and Gold Proof LE is 125.
