The 2022 Quarter - Maya AngelouThe Maya Angelou Quarter was the first coin in the American Women Quarters™ Program and was released in 3 January 2022.
Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a American writer, playwright, poet and social activist. Maya became famous for her memoir "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" which was the first of seven autobiographies about her childhood and early adult experiences. She created many books, plays, movies, and television shows.
The Reverse shows Maya Angelou with her arms uplifted. In the background is a silhouette of a purple martin, a songbird common to Maya’s birthplace; behind that the rising Sun. Text includes "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" "MAYA ANGELOU," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "QUARTER DOLLAR".
Sculptor was Craig Campbell and designer was Emily Damstra.
The Obverse shows a portrait of George Washington facing right designed by American sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser (1889-1966). The image was originally submitted in 1931.The coins are also available as Yearly Proof sets. Proof coins are minted at the San Francisco mint.
