2022 British Monarchs Henry VII – 1oz Gold Proof

The 2022 British Monarchs Henry VII - 1oz Gold Proof

This was the first coin to be released in the Royal Mint's British Monarchs Collection and was released January 2022. It features King Henry VII, the first of the House of Tudor. This coin is the 1oz Gold Proof, denominated as 100 pounds. Diameter 32.69mm.

Henry was born on 28 January 1457 to Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond and Lady Margaret Beaufort. He seized the Crown after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the Wars of the Roses. This was the last time an English King won the throne on a battlefield.

King Henry VII was the first of the Tudor monarchs and ruled from 22 August 1485 until his death on 21 April 1509, aged 52. He was succeeded by his son, Henry VIII.

As with the other coins in the British Monarchs Collection, there are a number of offerings from the Royal Mint. Initially, the silver coin is available in 1oz, 2oz and 5oz, and the gold coin is also as 1oz, 2oz and 5oz. There is a 2-coin gold set. All the coins were very popular and the Royal Mint sold out most coins within 20 minutes of launch.

The Reverse of the coin, designed by Alexander of Bruchsal, shows a portrait of King Henry VII as it would have appeared on a (hammered) coin during his reign 1485–1509.

The edge is milled.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
