The 2021 Fifty Pence - 100 Years of InsulinThe fifth coin in the Royal Mint's Innovation in Science series celebrates 100 years of Insulin. Diabetes is a serious concern today, but 100 years ago it was even worse.
In 1921, the pioneering work of John Macleod, Sir Frederick Banting, and an expert team including Charles Best and James Collip created a 'miracle' drug called Insulin. Insulin allowed people with diabetes a chance to lead a normal life and is one of the great medical breakthroughs of all time.
The coins are available as Silver Proof, Silver Proof Piedfort and standard BU finish.
