The 2020 Five Pound Coin - Tower of London: The Royal MenagerieOne of the strange stories of the Tower of London was that in 1235 Henry III (1216-72) created maybe the first zoo of exotic animals seen in England.
The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II gave Henry three lions (although he thought they were leopards), then Henry acquired a polar bear in 1252 and in 1255 added an African Elephant. The menagerie of never-seen-before animals at the Tower must have been absolutely mind-blowing for the people who saw it.
This is the second coin in the 2020 Tower of London Collection.
The Reverse, by Tim Noad, shows the three lions. In the background is one of the window arches of the Tower of London, a theme that runs through the 2020 Tower of London Collection.
