The 2020 Five Pound Coin - Reign of George III2020 is the 200th anniversary of the death of King George III, so the Royal Mint decided to issue a commemorative coin to celebrate the life of this long-reigning King.
George III was born on 4 June 1738 to Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha in the house of Hanover. He reigned from 25 October 1760 until 29 January 1820, so for over 59 years - a record for a King. Over such a long period there were many military conflicts with a wide number of adversaries from America to Africa including much of Europe. George III's reign also introduced some great coins, including the modern gold sovereign.
George had 15 children - nine sons and six daughters. In the latter part of his life George suffered from a mental illness and his son George became Prince Regent from 1811-1820 and ruled on his behalf. On George III's death, the Prince Regent became George IV.
The Reverse, by Dominique Evans, shows a portrait of George III with a background of various aspects of his life and times.
The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is available as BU and as Silver Proof, Silver Piedfort Proof and Gold Proof.
