The 2016 Great Fire of London £2In 1666 the Great Fire started at a bakery in Pudding Lane just after midnight on Sunday, 2 September, spread rapidly west across the City of London and burned until the 5th September 1666.
The fire destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St Pauls Cathedral and most of the City buildings. At the time 80,000 lived in London and 70,000 became homeless.
Most history records show that only 6 people lost their lives, but as so many were poor and unrecorded it may have been higher. However, the fire did end the Great Plague (Bubonic Plague - 'The Black Death') of 1665.
The inscription reads "1666 THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON 2016" with "TWO POUNDS" below THE WHOLE CITY IN DREADFUL FLAMES designed by Aaron West
