The 2016 American Eagle Platinum 1oz - ProofThe American Eagle Platinum coin series is available as 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10oz Platinum proof coins. The metal is pure (0.9995) platinum. It is also available as a bullion coin.
The diameter of the 1oz coin (denominated $100) is 32.7 mm (1.287 inches), weight 31.120 grams (1.0005 oz) and thickness of 2.39 mm (0.094 inches)
The Reverse, designed by Paul C. Bilan and engraved by Joseph Menna, shows a portrait of Liberty with a bald eagle in the background. Liberty holds the Torch of Enlightenment in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left hand with 13 branches representing the thirteen original colonies. The reverse also carries the text: .9995 PLATINUM 1OZ.
Note that this reverse is only for proof coins, the bullion coin has the same reverse as the 1997 American Eagle Platinum Bullion Reverse.
The edge is reeded and the coins carried a mint mark of 'W' for US Mint at West Point. (There is no mint mark on the bullion versions).
The Obverse, by John Mercanti, shows the head of Liberty, looking to the future.The coin is guaranteed by the United States Mint for weight, content, and purity.
