2013 Two Pound Coin - London Underground RoundelThe world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway opened in 1863 and is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines of the London Underground (or "Tube").
The roundel is a logo which first appeared on Underground station platforms in 1908. The bar and circle, as it became known, is a solid red enamel disc and horizontal blue bar. They were introduced as station nameboards.
This coin is to celebrate the London Underground 150th Anniversary. It is one of two coins celebrating the Underground in 2013. Designed by Edwina Ellis, shows The Roundel, a representation of the London Underground logo with "1863" above and "2013" below.
The edge is milled and carries the inscription "MIND THE GAP".
The obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
