The 2004 Two Pound Coin - Steam LocomotiveRichard Trevithick (1771–1833) was a British inventor and mining engineer from Cornwall. He was an early pioneer of steam-powered road and rail transport and developed of the first high-pressure steam engine. He built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive in 1804 and Trevithick's unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren Ironworks, in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
2004 was the 200th Anniversary of that first steam locomotive and a £2 coin celebrates the achievement. The coin shows a representation of a steam locomotive engine with the words 'TWO POUNDS' above and inside a cog wheel, the words 'R.TREVITHICK 1804 INVENTION INDUSTRY PROGRESS 2004'.
The edge is milled with an incuse railway line motif.
It was designed by Robert Lowe.
