The 1997 Two Pound Coin - Technological AchievementThe History of Technological Achievement two-pound coin was launched in 1998 (although dated 1997) as the first bi-metallic coin £2 issued in the UK. The coin was released as BU, proof, silver proof, silver proof Piedfort and gold proof.
The Reverse, designed by Bruce Rushin, illustrates the History of Technological Achievement showing the progress from the Iron Age, through the Industrial Revolution (cogs) to the Electronic Age (printed circuit board) and then the Internet (radio waves).
The edge is inscribed with the quote from Sir Isaac Newton: STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS.
The Observe of the 1997 coin is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth by Raphael Maklouf.The design was later used as the standard £2 coin reverse between 1998 and 2015 but with the obverse showing the portrait of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley.
