1997 Gold 2 Pound Coin - Shoulders of Giants
The 1997 gold proof two pounds piece commemorates the advancements in technology.
Designed by Bruce Rushin, the reverse features four concentric circles representing the Iron Age, 18th century industrial development, silicon chip and the internet. The edge inscription reads ‘STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS’.
Queen Elizabeth II’s third portrait can be seen on the obverse, designed by Raphael Maklouf.
The gold two pounds piece is made of 22 carat gold (Gold Fineness of 0.916), and weighs 15.98 grams. It has a diameter of 28.40mm.
The outer disc is made of ‘red’ gold, with the inner disc being ‘yellow’ gold.
The coin was originally housed in a Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsule, presented in its Royal Mint green leatherette case, accompanied with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity (COA).
2,482 1997 gold proof two pounds pieces were issued by the Royal Mint in 1997.
