The 1919 KN Penny - George V Although the Royal Mint had a pre-WWI capacity to mint 150 million coins per year, it still needed to contract private mints to help in production. They used two mints in Birmingham, the larger was Heatons Birmingham Mint (in 1912, 1918 and 1919) and the other was the Kings Norton Metal Co. (in 1918 and 1919). They used mint marks of 'H' and 'KN' respectively.
The 1919 KN (SCBC 4053) is the rarest of the pennies produced by these private mints. The Kings Norton Penny has the mint mark on the left of the date:

The edge is plain.
The Reverse shows Britannia seated, with Trident and shield. It is the same as other pennies of that era with the exception of the 'KN' mint mark.
The Obverse shows a portrait of King George V by Australian sculpter Bertram MacKennal.Images used by permission of M J Hughes Coins.
