The 1918 KN Penny - George VThe Kings Norton 1918KN Penny, minted by the Kings Norton Metal Co in Birmingham. It is the same design as other 1918 pennies with the exception of the 'KN' mint mark. Diameter 30.86mm. SCBC: 4053.
This is a Bronze coin. There were some minted in Cupronickel which are extremely rare.
Although the Royal Mint had a pre-WWI capacity to mint 150 million coins per year, it still needed to contract private mints to help in production. They used two mints in Birmingham, the larger was Heatons Birmingham Mint (in 1912, 1918 and 1919) and the other was the Kings Norton Metal Co. (in 1918 and 1919). They used mint marks of 'H' and 'KN' respectively.
The Reverse of the Kings Norton Penny, by Leonard Charles Wyon, shows Britannia seated, with Trident and shield. Date in exergue and has the mint mark 'KN' on the left.
The edge is plain.
