The 1902 Half-Sovereign Matt Proof - Edward VIIBesides the 1902 Bullion Half-sovereign, this Matt Proof half-sovereign was also minted. The 1902 Gold Half-Sovereign was the first sovereign in the reign of King Edward VII. Although Edward became King in 1901, no coins were issued in his name until 1902 (There is a 1901 half-sovereign of Queen Victoria).
London mint. SCBC: 3974A. Diameter 19.30mm and weighs 3.99g.
1902 half-sovereigns were minted in London (no mint mark) and Sydney (which carried a 'S' mint mark). The reverse designer's initials (BP - Benedetto Pistrucci) do not appear in the exergue on the reverse of the bullion half-sovereign (but were added in 1904). The matt proof does have the initials B.P. in the exergue.
The 1902 London Half-Sovereign depicts Benedetto Pistrucci’s famous portrayal of St George slaying the dragon can be seen on the reverse of the coin. No letter above the date indicates the sovereign was produced in London by the Royal Mint.
Edge is milled.
King Edward VII’s bare-head portrait, by George W. de Saulles, can be seen on the obverse of the coin.The mintage of the Matt Proof is 15,123 (compare to the bullion mintage of around 4,244,450).
