1874 Gold Sovereign Melbourne (St George)

The 1874 Gold Sovereign - Melbourne (St George)

Benedetto Pistrucci's famous portrayal of St. George slaying the dragon is depicted on the reverse of the coin.

In 1874 there was also a shield reverse.

The edge is reeded.

The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Victoria by William Wyon. The engravers initials ('WW') are embedded in the truncation of the neck.

Below the neck is a capital 'M' indicating the Melbourne Mint.
