The 1872 Gothic Florin mdccclxxii - VictoriaWith the date in Roman Numerals on the obverse, this series of coins (1852-1887) were known as Gothic Florins. At the time the coin was controversial for a number of reasons, but it is a truly beautiful coin.
Sterling silver, just over 11.3g. SCBC: 3893, Type B. Maybe one of the lowest priced Gothic Florins.
The Obverse, designed by Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint William Wyon, shows Queen Victoria wearing a crown, which is itself unusual on a coin.
The Reverse, by William Dyce, shows an ornately decorated crowned cross. Note the legend says 'one tenth of a pound' maybe indicating early thoughts of decimalisation.Image credit: The Royal Mint
