The 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar - USA The 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar was the second USA silver dollar coin to be minted (after the 1794 version). It had a diameter of 39-40mm, weighed 26.96g and had a silver content of 0.900. These are very desirable and expensive coins, difficult to find in high quality grades where the price can be more than $1 million.
There are many variations as the coins were individually made.
The design was only used for two years (1794-1795) due to problems achieving a consistent, good quality coin. Blanks were weighed before the coin was struck so overweight coins were filed. Some 1795 coins were weight-adjusted by inserting a silver plug in the centre of the blank before the strike. The Silver Plug varieties command higher prices.
The Obverse, by Robert Scot, shows an image of Liberty with flowing hair, said to indicate freedom.
The Reverse, also by Robert Scot, shows an eagle with wings open. The branch below each wing may have two or tree leaves. The two-leaves and three-leaves varieties have similar prices.Image credit: CC National Numismatic Collection, National Museum of American History.
