The 1788 Guinea - SpadeThe 1788 Reverse was designed by Lewis Pingo (1743-1830) and shows the 'Spade' design. This design was used on guineas between 1787 and 1799.
The inscription is grandiose and highlights a country at the height of power: 'M·B·F·ET·H·REX·F·D·B·ET·L·D·S·R·I·A·T·ET·E' meaning "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland; Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire". Dated '1788' below.
