The 1702 Guinea - Anne - Pre-UnionGold guinea of Queen Anne minted in the pre-Union period of 1702. These were the first guineas of Anne's reign. Pre-Union coins show a rose at the centre of the reverse, whereas post-Union coins have the Garter star.
The Obverse shows a portrait of Queen Anne by John Croker. Legend is "ANNA DEI GRATIA" (Anne by the grace of God). Legend "ANNA. DEI. GRATIA." Meaning "Anne by the grace of God". Toothed border.
The edge is milled. The 1702 Proof Guinea has a plain edge.
The Reverse shows crowned cruciform coats-of-arms with sceptres in the quarters and English Rose in the centre. Legend is "MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REG." showing Anne as Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland. Toothed border.
Like many Queen Anne coins these guineas are expensive and this coin in AU58 condition was being offered by the Royal Mint for over £25,000 in 2025.Image credit: The Royal Mint
