The 1693 Shilling - William and MaryWilliam and Mary Shilling minted in 1693 by the Royal Mint at the Tower Mint in London. Silver, diameter 26mm and weighs 5.77g. A shilling was 12 old pence, equivalent to the 5p coin in modern coinage.
Design is Spink 3437 and was used 1692 and 1693 with a few variations. The 1693 coin variants include a 9/0 overstrike.
The legend (in Latin) reads continuously on both sides of the coin and roughly translates to 'William and Mary, by the Grace of God, King and Queen of Great Britain France, and Ireland'.
The Obverse shows laureated conjoined busts of William and Mary facing right. Legend around is "GVLIELMVS ET MARIA DEI GRATIA".
Edge has diagonal milling (///).
The Reverse has crowned shields of England, Scotland, France and Ireland forming a cross shape around the arms of Nassau at the centre. in the angles are monogram 'WM' above a numeral of the date 1693. Legend around is "MAG BR FR ET HI REX ET REGINA".Image credit: Museums Victoria
