The 1690 Guinea - William and MaryGold Guinea of King William and Queen Mary minted by the Royal Mint in 1690. This is the SCBC 3426 and it has a few variants. On some 1690 guineas there is a small elephant and castle logo below the bust; this indicates that the gold came from the Africa Company.
The Obverse shows the conjoined bust of William and Mary.
The Reverse shows a crowned quartered shield of arms, with the Lion of Nassau in the centre.
The Guinea started the reign of William and Mary valued at 21 shillings and 6 pence, but towards the end of the reign the value had risen to nearly 30 shillings.Image credit: M J Hughes Coins
