The 1674 Penny - Charles IISilver Penny from the reign of King Charles II, dated 1674. Struck by the Royal Mint (at the Tower Mint) in London. This may have been part of a Maundy set. Diameter 12mm and weighs 0.336g. SCBC: 3390.
You can see an interesting fault on this coin: the G in GRATIA is reversed. This was a common variant in the 1674-76 pennies and does not add that much value to the coin.
The Obverse shows a laureate and draped bust of King Charles II, facing right. Legend is "CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA" with the G backward (not reversed) as noted above.
Edge is plain.
The Reverse is a large 'C' with a crown above it, certainly making a statement about the restored monarchy. Legend is "MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX. 1674".Image credit: Museums Victoria
