The 1592 Crown Elizabeth I - GoldHammered Gold Crown of Elizabeth I, minted around 1592-1595 at the Tower Mint, London. Diameter 23mm and weight of 2.774g. SCBC 2536.
The Obverse show a crowned bust of Elizabeth I, wearing a decorated dress with ruff. Inner bead circle. Legend is ELIZAB D G ANG FRA ET HIB REGI. The small barrel before the ELIZAB is a mint mark called a 'tun' and indicates 1592-1595.
The Edge is plain.
The Reverse is a crown quartered shield with arms if France in quarters 1 & 4 and England in 2 & 3. Initials E R divided. The legend starts again with the tun mint mark and reads SCVTVM FIDET PROTEGET EAM, meaning 'the shield of faith shall protect her'.Image credit: Museums Victoria
