The 1578-1579 Penny - Elizabeth IHammered Silver Penny of Elizabeth I, minted between 1578 and 1579 at the Tower Mint in London. Fifth issue, 0.921 silver. Diameter 15mm and weight 0.514g. SCBC: 2575. North: 2001.
The Obverse shows a crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth I facing left, wearing a ruff and embroided dress. Mint mark is a cross. Legend is "E D G ROSA SINE SPINA", meaning Elizabeth by the grace of God, a rose without a thorn.
The Reverse shows a quartered shield. arms of France at 1&4 and arms of England at 2&4. Beaded circle with cross fourchee over. Legend is "CIVITAS LONDON" with mint mark cross.Image credit: Museums Victoria
