The 1547-1551 Gold Half-Sovereign (in the name of Henry VIII) - Edward VIGold Half-Sovereign minted in the reign of King Edward VI around 1547-1551 but issued in the name of Henry VIII.
SCBC 2391. North: 1865. Diameter 32mm and weighs 5.919g. Half-Sovereigns are worth 10 shillings. Minted at the Tower Mint (London).
Gold coins of Edward VI can have many variations, and they are expensive (starting at thousands of pounds going on to tens of thousands and even more).
The Obverse shows the young Edward VI enthroned facing front, holding a sword and orb. Mint mark and part of Tudor rose removed from die. Legend is "HENRIC 8 D G AGL FRANCI Z HIB REX".
The Reverse shows a crowned, quartered shield with the arms of England and France supported by a crowned lion at left and a dragon at right. Legend is "IHS AVTEM TRANSIENS PER MEDI ILLOR IBAT", meaning 'But Jesus passing through the midst of them went his way'.Note this coin does show some signs of being removed from a jewellery mount.
