The 1483-1485 Groat - Richard IIIRare Silver Groat of King Richard III. The design is essentially the same as his predecessors and as is common with Richard III coins this is a Type IIb/IIIa mule, with the two muled mintmarks being a boar’s head 2 and halved sun & rose 2.
Diameter 25mm, weighs 3,2g. Minted between 1483 and 1485 at the London Mint. The coin has been restored in some way. SCBC: 2156/2157. MEG type 2B/3 mule; Winstanley 9; Stewartby p. 434, IIb/IIIa; North 1679.
The Obverse shows a crowned head facing eclosed in tressure of arches. Legend is (boar’s head 2) "RICΛRD’· DI· GRΛ· R?X ΛnGL’· Z· FRΛnC" (saltire stops; Z retrograde).
Reverse shows a long cross pattée with triple pellets in quarters. Legend is outer and inner: (halved sun & rose 2) "POSVI D?Vm : Λ DIVTOR ?" and "m?Vm/ CIVI TAS LOn DOn" (double saltire stops).Rare and probably in the £3000-6000 range.
