The 1412-1413 Groat - Henry IV - Light CoinageSilver Groat (4 pence) of King Henry IV, minted at the Tower Mint in London between 1412 and 1413. Classed as Light Coinage as in 1412 Henry IV made some coins with less silver content as bullion was scarce and Henry short of money.
Diameter 27mm and weighs 3.454g. There are 9 arches in the tressure (the circular border pattern surrounding the King's head) so this is SCBC 1728. North 1359.
The Obverse is a crowned bust facing. Pellet to the left of the crown. Legend is "HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL FRANC".
The Edge is plain.
The Reverse has a Long Cross pattée with triple pellets (the three beads) in each quarter. Two concentric rings giving an inner and our legend display. Outer Text is "+ POSVI DEVM ADIVTOREM MEUM" meaning "I have made God my helper". Inner legend text indicates the mint "CIVITAS LONDON" which is "City of London".It is rare to find a coin in this condition and so will be very expensive to buy.
