The 139AD Denarius - Antoninus Pius / EwerSilver Denarius of Emperor Antoninus Pius, minted at the Rome Mint in 139AD. Diameter 17mm, weighs 3.2g.
Dating: The Reverse says "COS II" and Antoninus Pius became Consul for the second time on 1 Jan 139AD. Later in 139AD he took the title Pater Patria and the letters "P P" were added at the end of the reverse legend. As this coins does not have PP then it must have been struck before he adopted that title and thus dates to early 139AD, making this coin one of the first issued by Emperor Antoninus Pius.
The Obverse shows the laureated head of Emperor Antoninus Pius facing right. Legend is "IMP T AEL CAES HADR ANTONINVS".
The Reverse shows Priestly implements: a sprinkler, ewer (a large jug), lituus (a crooked wand) and simpulum (a ladle). Legend around is "AVG PIVS P M TR P COS II".Image credit: Museums Victoria
